My ChatGPT-made website form doesn't send anything. How do I fix it?

Quick answer

A form ChatGPT or Claude writes usually has nowhere to send entries: the form tag has no address, or a script only shows a thank-you message. Connect it to something that receives entries. A form service such as Formspree takes one line, or Convika hosts the page and puts in a form that emails you each entry.

On this page

You asked ChatGPT for a page with a form: a sign-up for your club, a contact form for your shop, or a feedback form after a workshop. You typed your own email into it, pressed the button, and saw "Thanks! We'll be in touch." Then nothing arrived. No email, no list, nothing anywhere. The form isn't broken in a way you can see. It was never connected to anything. This guide shows how to find the cause in 2 minutes and 2 ways to fix it, and lists what to check on the rest of the page before you share it.

Why the form sends nothing

A form only collects what people type. Something else has to receive it and store it or email it to you. When ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini writes a single HTML file, there's nothing on the other end, so the form usually takes one of these 4 shapes:

  1. No address, or action="#". The action attribute is the address that receives the entry. MDN describes it as "the URL that processes the form submission." With none, pressing the button sends the entry back to the same page, which throws it away.
  2. A script that only says thanks. An onsubmit handler stops the form and shows a message. It looks finished, and nothing leaves the page:
<form onsubmit="event.preventDefault(); alert('Thanks! We\'ll be in touch.')">
  <input type="email" placeholder="you@example.com" required>
  <button>Sign up</button>
</form>
  1. action="mailto:...". This hands the entry to the visitor's own email app, if one is set up. Nothing reaches you unless the visitor finishes and sends that email.
  2. A script that posts to a service you never set up. The AI may write code for EmailJS or Formspree with a placeholder key such as YOUR_PUBLIC_KEY. Until you sign up and put in your own key, the request fails.

One more cause has nothing to do with the code. If the address bar starts with file:///, you're looking at the file on your own computer, and nobody else can reach the form.

Find the cause in 2 minutes

  1. Open the page at its public link, not the file on your computer.
  2. Fill in the form with an email address you can check, and send it.
  3. Look where the entry should land: your inbox, the spam folder, or the form service's dashboard.
  4. If nothing came, open the HTML file and search for <form. Read the action and onsubmit in that tag, and compare it with the table.

Fix it with a form service, on any host

If the page already lives somewhere you like, a form service receives the entries for you. Formspree's free plan takes 50 submissions a month, with unlimited forms, and keeps submissions for 30 days.

  1. Sign up at Formspree and create a form. It gives you an address like https://formspree.io/f/abcdwxyz.
  2. Ask the AI, word for word: "Change the form so it posts to https://formspree.io/f/abcdwxyz with method POST. Give every input a name attribute, and remove any script that stops the form from sending." A field without a name isn't sent.
  3. Upload the changed page to your host, and send yourself a test entry.

Fix the form on Convika in 4 steps

Convika hosts the page and supplies the form. Each entry is emailed to you as it arrives and listed in your dashboard, and you don't need a separate form account. The Free plan needs no credit card.

1. Ask the AI to leave a spot for the form

Before you upload, ask the AI, word for word: "Remove the form, and put <div data-convika-form></div> in its place." Convika puts its form exactly there. This step matters even if the form looks fine. Convika spots some forms that send nowhere, but not a form with an onsubmit script like the example above, and not one on a page whose scripts send things elsewhere. A form it misses stays on the page next to the new one, and visitors type into the wrong one.

2. Upload the page

Use the upload box at the top of this page and click Keep this page — free, no card, or sign up at app.convika.com and click Upload an HTML file. Drop the file, or paste the code on Paste code, then click Create my preview. The file can be up to 2 MB.

If the page is already on Convika, upload the changed file under New version from a file and click Upload as a new version. The page keeps its link.

3. Add the Convika form

On the page's screen, click Add a form to my page. If Convika found a form that sends nowhere, you see "A form on this page sends entries nowhere" instead, with Replace with a Convika form, which puts the new form where the old one was.

Pick the fields: Email only, Name and email, or Name, email, and message. You can change each field's label, the button text, and the message people see after sending. There are no separate phone or address fields. If you need them, pick the third set and relabel the message field, for example "Phone number and address". Click Add form to my page. Convika makes a new preview with the form, and your live page doesn't change until you publish.

4. Publish and send a test entry

Click Publish. The first time you publish, Convika asks you to Choose how to publish your page: Free, the 1-year Pro pass ($29 once), or Pro monthly. On Free, the page is published as Public: anyone with the link can open it, and it may show up in search results and in Convika's gallery. To keep it out of both, choose Private link (Pro or pass) in the confirmation. Then open the live page and send yourself an entry. Entries sent from a preview aren't saved, so test on the live page.

The entry appears under Forms on the page's screen. Click View submissions to read them all, or Export CSV to download them. On Free, Convika shows and emails up to 50 entries a month across all your forms. Entries past that are still saved, and Pro shows them.

On a Convika page, a script can't send to services such as EmailJS. A form wired to EmailJS or a similar service with a script stops working there, which is one more reason to swap it for the Convika form.

Have Convika set it up for you

If you'd rather not touch the code, Convika can make the page for you. For a business page, answer 4 questions about your business, and a private preview arrives by email within 2 days. Asking is free. You can ask for up to 2 rounds of changes before you pay.

You pay $199 once, and only if you want the page published. That includes the page with a form that saves each entry, setup on a domain you own, and 12 months of Pro, with no subscription. The details are on the pricing page.

Check these before you share the page

The form is the part people notice last and the part that costs the most when it fails. Other parts of an AI-made page fail quietly too. Go through this list on your phone, on the live link:

  • The form: a test entry from the live page arrives where you expect it.
  • Every button and link: each one goes somewhere. AI pages often have buttons such as "Book now" that lead nowhere, or links that point to #.
  • Embedded maps and videos: they load on the live page, not just in the AI's preview.
  • What the page claims: prices, opening hours, addresses, and reviews are yours and true. An AI fills gaps with believable text, and a made-up review or price is worse than none.
  • The phone layout: nothing runs off the screen, and the form fields are big enough to tap.

What Convika's form doesn't do

  • No reply to the person who sends it. They see your message on the page. The email goes only to you.
  • No payments. A form can't take money.
  • No file uploads, and no fields beyond the 3 sets. You can relabel the fields, but not add more.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't my HTML form send email?

An HTML form can't send email by itself. It needs a receiver: a form service, a server, or a host that stores entries. A form ChatGPT wrote usually has no action, action="#", or a script that only shows a thank-you message, so the entry goes nowhere.

Can ChatGPT make a working contact form?

ChatGPT can write the form, but not the part that receives entries. Connect it to a receiver: paste a form service's address into the form's action, or ask ChatGPT to put <div data-convika-form></div> where the form goes and add a Convika form there after you upload the page.

Do I need a backend for a form?

Not your own. A form service such as Formspree, or a host such as Convika that stores entries, is the backend for you. You only change the form, or let the host put its own form in.

How do I test my form before going live?

Open the page at its public link, send an entry with an email address you can check, and look in your inbox, your spam folder, and the form service's dashboard. On Convika, entries sent from a preview aren't saved, so publish first and test the live page.

Can someone set it up for me?

Yes. Convika's Made for you service makes the page with a working form from your answers to 4 questions. You see a private preview first, can ask for up to 2 rounds of changes, and pay $199 once, only if you publish it.
