ChatGPT canvas is gone: where your HTML shows now, and how to share it

Quick answer

OpenAI's model release notes for May 28, 2026 stated that “canvas will no longer be available in GPT-5.5 Instant or GPT-5.5 Thinking,” moving writing and coding into writing blocks and code blocks in the chat response. That same update noted that paid users could keep canvas for a limited time through legacy models. OpenAI's help centre, read October 17, 2026, names no model that still has it, and its canvas article now returns, “That page doesn't exist.” Since October 7, ChatGPT runs GPT-6, and its interactive answers stay inside the conversation. To see an HTML page today, select Preview on a supported code block. To let someone else open the page, copy the code into one HTML file and publish it, because a ChatGPT share link shows the conversation and ChatGPT Sites is not on Free or Go. The box on this page turns code into a preview link with no signup, works 3 minutes, and keeps the page's scripts off.

On this page

You ask ChatGPT for a page, as you did in the spring. You wait for the canvas panel to open with the page running beside the chat. It does not open. The code lands in the answer. You are unsure where to see the page or how to send it.

This guide explains what OpenAI changed, where HTML shows in ChatGPT now, and how to turn the code into a link someone else opens. The details come from OpenAI's help centre as read on October 17, 2026, and button names match the help's.

What happened to canvas

OpenAI's model release notes, under “GPT-5.5 Instant Update (May 28, 2026),” state: “With this update, canvas will no longer be available in GPT-5.5 Instant or GPT-5.5 Thinking. Writing and coding functionality is now supported directly in chat responses through writing blocks and code blocks.”

  • Legacy models were the way back, in May. That same entry states: “Paid users can continue using canvas for a limited time through legacy models until those models are sunset.” According to the ChatGPT release notes of March 17, 2026, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users click Configure in the model picker to “Access legacy models.” No OpenAI page read on October 17 names a model that still has canvas.
  • GPT-5.5 itself is leaving. The newest entry in the model release notes, from October 14, 2026, says: “We're retiring GPT-5.5 from ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex.”
  • GPT-6 since October 7. The release notes state that ChatGPT “can now combine text, visuals, and interactive elements to fit your question,” including “tools you can use directly in the conversation, such as calculators, bill splitters, and games,” rolling out to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise first, and to Free and Go from the next day. OpenAI's Intelligent UI help calls these “interactive experiences you can use directly in your conversation,” and describes no way to open one at a URL.
  • The canvas article is gone. OpenAI's help article on canvas answered “UH OH. THAT PAGE DOESN'T EXIST.” on October 17.

The help pages read do not say whether an old chat still shows its canvas, or opens it again. If your page's code is still in the chat, copy it, and publish with the steps below.

Seeing your HTML in ChatGPT now

OpenAI's help on writing blocks and code blocks shows where canvas's job went:

  • Select Preview. OpenAI states, “For supported code blocks, select Preview to view the result inside ChatGPT.” First in its list of supported previews is “HTML pages,” followed by React components, SVG images, Mermaid diagrams, and Vega charts.
  • No Preview button means no preview. OpenAI explains, “If Preview does not appear, the code block does not support a preview.” It adds, “Available actions vary by plan, device, workspace settings, model, and rollout.”
  • The preview lives in ChatGPT. The help guide notes, “Code previews and code execution use a sandboxed environment.” What runs there stays on your screen. It does not live at an address someone else can open.

To look at the page outside ChatGPT, copy the code and go to the free HTML viewer. Click Paste code, paste the code, and click Show the page. Its CSS and JavaScript run. The code isn't sent to Convika. Phone shows it at a phone's width.

  • A share link shows the chat. OpenAI's sharing help states that “Anyone who has a link created from a personal account can view the shared conversation,” and a personal link “includes the content available when the link is created or updated. Messages added later are not included automatically.” Someone you send it to reads your prompts as well as the page.
  • ChatGPT Sites needs a paid plan. OpenAI's Sites help explains that “ChatGPT Sites is available to ChatGPT Plus and Pro accounts and supported Business and Enterprise workspaces,” and “Sites is not available on Free or Go.” Review prices and limits in ChatGPT Sites alternatives.
  • On any plan, publishing the HTML gives the page its own address. The 4 steps below use Convika's Free plan. See other hosts compared in How to publish ChatGPT HTML.

Publish the HTML in 4 steps

1. Paste ChatGPT's code into the box

Ask ChatGPT, word for word: “Put this page into one HTML file, with all the CSS and JavaScript inside it.” Copy everything in the code block. Switch the box at the top of this page to Paste code, paste the code, and click Get my preview link. If ChatGPT gave you a file, drop the .html file instead. The box accepts one .html or .htm file, up to 2 MB, with no account needed. When you see “Your preview is ready,” open it and check the look. Its scripts are off, so buttons and games do not run there yet.

2. Keep the page

Click Keep this page — free, no card above the preview link, then sign up. The page moves into your account, and its scripts turn on. Go to the page's screen and click Open preview to try the buttons.

3. Publish it

Click Publish. A dialog asks Who can open this page?. Choose Public, so anyone with the link opens it, and click Publish again. The page goes live at an address like yourpage.convika.page, which stays the same until you click Unpublish. Free includes 10,000 page views a month across all your pages. The Free plan covers 1 published page, with a small Convika bar at the bottom of each page. Pro removes it. If you want only certain people to view it, select Only people with the password. Passwords are part of Pro ($12 a month).

On the page's screen, click Copy next to the Live URL. Paste it into a message or an email. Your recipient opens the page in the browser with no ChatGPT account and no Convika account.

Ask ChatGPT for the change, and copy the new code. Go to the page's screen. Under New version from a file, select Paste code. Paste the code, then click Upload as a new version. Uploading uses no AI credits. The card says “Preview v2 is ready,” so click Open preview and then Publish v2 at the same link. The link you sent opens the fixed page. Upload an HTML file in the dashboard makes a new page at a new address, so it is not for a fix.

For a class

The same steps turn a ChatGPT quiz or review game into a link students open on Chromebooks without an account. For a prompt that works as one file, the QR code, and what to check before class, read How to share a ChatGPT quiz or game with students.

Frequently asked questions

Where did ChatGPT canvas go?

OpenAI moved canvas out of the chat interface and replaced it with standard code blocks. Release notes state that canvas is “no longer available” in GPT-5.5 Instant and GPT-5.5 Thinking as of May 28, 2026. GPT-6 launched on October 7, and OpenAI help pages read on October 17 list no model that includes canvas. An HTML page now shows when you select Preview on a supported code block.

Was ChatGPT canvas removed?

Yes, OpenAI took canvas out of GPT-5.5. The May 28 release entry marked canvas as “no longer available” in GPT-5.5 Instant and Thinking, though paid users retained access for a limited time through legacy models. Help pages read on October 17 state no official end date for canvas itself. Its help article returns a 404 error.

How do I preview HTML in ChatGPT?

Select Preview on the code block containing your HTML. OpenAI's help lists HTML pages among its supported preview formats. If the block does not display a Preview option, that specific code block does not support one. To check your page outside ChatGPT, paste the code into an HTML viewer.

Does ChatGPT have a code preview?

Yes, supported code blocks offer both Code and Preview options. Selecting Preview displays the working page inside ChatGPT within a sandbox. According to OpenAI's help, preview availability depends on your plan, device, workspace settings, model, and rollout.

How do I share a page ChatGPT made?

Publish the HTML code and share the resulting link. A standard ChatGPT share link displays the conversation text, and ChatGPT Sites is unavailable on Free or Go plans. With Convika Free, paste your code into the upload box, publish it, and copy the Live URL. Anyone you send the link to can open the page without an account.

Is there an alternative to ChatGPT canvas for HTML?

To view your page, use the Preview button on the code block inside ChatGPT or open the code in an HTML viewer outside the chat. To share the page, use a hosting service that publishes an HTML file at its own web address, such as Convika, Netlify Drop, or GitHub Pages. Review how to publish ChatGPT HTML to see options compared.

A link takes the place of canvas

Paste the code ChatGPT wrote and publish it. Whoever gets the link opens the page in their browser on a phone or computer, with no account needed.
